We search for the very best coffees available from particular regions, but we get particularly interested when our work with that coffee can make a direct impact in the world. Our importing partner Atlas Coffee, along with Addis Exporters, have launched a project to benefit the Girls Gotta Run Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Addis Ababa working to empower young women in Ethiopia through running and educational programs. Both Atlas and Addis are contributing 5 cents per pound sold to Girls Gotta Run, and Evans Brothers is contributing another 10 cents per 12oz bag sold.
From the GGRF website: "Girls Gotta Run Foundation (GGRF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that invests in girls who use running and education to empower themselves and their communities. While most do not become professional athletes, some do; and training allows them all to stay in school, avoid early marriage, and enhance their personal economic opportunities. It also develops their sense of well being and personal power. Material support provided by GGRF includes, but is not limited to, funds for running shoes, training clothes, extra food ("calorie money"), coach subsidies, and other training-related expenses. GGRF also advises local and partnering organizations on gender sensitive issues and advocates for gender equity in all running programs and organizations."
While the region of Yirgacheffe has been known for producing some of the best coffee in the world for many years, there are still relatively unknown micro-regions within the area that are just now receiving well-deserved attention from specialty coffee buyers. One such area is called Sisota, located at the base of a mountain called "Rako" by the locals. "Rako" translates literally into "challenging," and with a look at its steep, rocky slopes it's easy to see how the mountain earned its name. The lowest altitude Sisota farming areas are over 2,000 meters above sea level, and they've been cultivating heirloom Typica varieties for decades.
